The Glorious British Carrot — History, Nutrition & Why the Season Starts Now

Late summer marks a milestone on the UK farming calendar — the first harvest of the new carrot season. From fields across England, freshly pulled carrots begin making their way to tables, bringing with them a sweetness and earthiness that only a truly seasonal vegetable can offer. At Organic Delivery Company, we think this deserves celebrating.

A Brief History of the Carrot

Carrots are one of the oldest cultivated vegetables in the world, with origins tracing back over 5,000 years to the region of present-day Afghanistan. Early carrots were purple or yellow — not the familiar orange we know today. It wasn't until the 17th century in The Netherlands that orange carrots were selectively bred, likely as a tribute to William of Orange, and quickly became the dominant variety across Europe.

By the time they reached Britain, carrots had become a staple. During World War II, the British government ran a famous campaign encouraging people to eat more carrots as a substitute for scarce sugar — and to cleverly disguise that radar technology was responsible for RAF successes by claiming pilots had exceptional night vision from eating carrots. The myth stuck!

    Interesting Carrot Facts

    • Carrots are 88% water — making them naturally hydrating as well as nutritious.
    • The average Briton eats around 10kg of carrots per year, making them one of the UK's most popular vegetables.
    • Rainbow carrots — purple, yellow, and white — aren't a modern invention. They're a return to the carrot's ancient roots. (boom boom)
    • Carrot tops are edible and can be used in pesto, salads, and stocks — zero-waste cooking at its best.
    • They're one of the few vegetables that are actually more nutritious cooked than raw, as heat breaks down the cell walls and releases more beta-carotene.

    Nutritional Benefits

    Carrots are genuinely nutritional powerhouses:

    • Beta-carotene — converted to Vitamin A in the body, essential for eye health, immune function, and skin.
    • Fibre — supports gut health and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels.
    • Vitamin K1 — important for bone health and blood clotting.
    • Potassium — supports heart health and blood pressure regulation.
    • Antioxidants — particularly in purple and rainbow varieties, which contain anthocyanins linked to reduced inflammation.
